Soudan Underground Mine Tours Minnesota DNR
Tours will resume June 12 2021. Minnesota 39s first iron ore minethe Soudan Mineopened in 1882. Operations went underground by 1892 since the ore body continued deep into the ground. The mine 39s value was in the special kind of ore it produced. The ore 39s high oxygen content was used to make highquality steel in openhearth furnaces.

Mesabi Range Wikipedia
The Mesabi Iron Range is a mining district in northeastern Minnesota following an elongate trend containing large deposits of iron ore. It is the largest of four major iron ranges in the region collectively known as the Iron Range of Minnesota. First described in 1866 it is the chief iron ore mining district in the United States.

In 1883 Charlemagne Tower built the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad D and IR linking the town of Tower with Two Harbors on the shore of Lake Superior. Starting in 1884 lake freighters delivered the ore to the steel mills through the lower lakes ports. In 1888 the railroad was extended to the mines in Ely Minnesota.
