The site was first discovered in 1935. The Hiawatha Iron Mine was closed at the time of data entry with no known plans to reopen.

Hiawatha No. 1 Mine Hiawatha Group Stambaugh Iron Co

The Munro Iron Mining Co. began operating the Hiawatha No. 1 iron mine in 1893. This complex grew to include several smaller mines and mining properties: the Anna Mine North Hiawatha property West Hiawatha property Chatham Mine Stegmiller property and the east half the producing half of the Wickwire Mine.

An iron mine opened by the Brule Mining Co. before 1931 at which time it was purchased by the Hanna Iron Ore Co. The property was later incorporated into the Hiawatha Group. The mine featured two levels to 490 feet depth. Only one shipment from the existing stockpile was ever made by Hanna. This mine was sometimes known as the Hiawatha No. 3.

The Hiawatha 1 was the deepest mine in Iron County and one of the most productive. The Mine was worked from 1893 to 1967. The M. A. Hanna Company was one of the large mining companies that moved into the Michigan iron area in the early 1900s consolidated smaller properties and engaged in exploration for other economic deposits.
